Wolf, Julian
Rowing - 1997
Julian Wolf founded and coached the University of Southern California crew in 1948. One year earlier, he was across town as a member of UCLA’s varsity crew team.
In 1989, Wolf was inducted into the U.S. Rowing Hall of Fame.
In 1941, Wolf was a member of the Bruin’s freshman crew team, and also played freshman football. He moved up to varsity crew and JV football the following year.
Wolf spent the next three years in military service (a cryptographer in Army counter- intelligence), returning to UCLA and varsity crew in 1947.
Wolf was a member and Chairman of the US Men’s Olympic Rowing Committee 1971 – 1988, and Manager of the United States’ 1984 men’s Olympic Rowing Team. He served as Manager of the U.S. Pan-Am Rowing Teams of 1975 and 1979, and was the Chef d’Mission of the 1978 U.S. Rowing Team.
In 1990, Wolf founded and was Director of the U.S. Rowing Umpire School at the Olympic Training Center.
Julian was responsible for organizing, funding, and coaching United States crew teams for the VII (1965), VIII (1969), and IX (1973) World Maccabiah Games in Israel.
