Pillar of Achievement - 1993

Larry Weinberg was one of the original (1970) principal owners of the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers. He became majority owner in 1975, and sold the club in 1988. The Blazers won the NBA Championship in 1977.

Weinberg was Chairman of the NBA Board of Governors from 1980-1983, overseeing the retirement of Commissioner Larry O’Brien and subsequent election of David Stern as Commissioner. It was during this period that the “salary cap” was initiated, the first salary cap for any professional sports league. Larry is one of only two NBA owners to have their number retired.

At the time of his SCJSHOF induction in 1993, one-time UCLA undergrad Weinberg had been a Director of the Jewish Federation Council of Los Angeles continuously since 1964. He was also President of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) 1976-1982, and its Chairman 1982-1988.
