For over 50 years, Ted Sobel has been one of the most recognized and honored radio voices in Southern California. Growing up in Culver City, he attended Fairfax High School and Los Angeles City College in their Radio and TV Department. He became the premier sports radio onsite reporter in Southern California, broadcasting live from local events, highlights of which include LA Dodgers World Series, starting in 1974, LA Kings Stanley Cup Finals, Lakers championship runs, plus many Super Bowls, Rose Bowls and NCAA Basketball Championships.
He was lead field reporter/sports anchor at KFWB radio when they were honored for a record ten consecutive years as ‘best sports anchor group in Southern California’ by the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Association. He was on the air at KFWB for 23 years where he did over 40,000 sports reports, and was also on KNX News Radio over a four decade span, and was a three-time Golden Mike Award recipient (equivalent to an Oscar) for his individual sports reporting.
Prior to joining KFWB, Ted was an anchor/reporter at KMPC when it became LA’s first all-sports radio station. He produced L.A. Rams and UCLA Football games for their flagship station KMPC. He has done play-by-play for Long Beach State basketball and football, and UC Irvine basketball. He also spent 10 years calling hockey on radio and TV, including the Long Beach Ice Dogs and at the University of Wisconsin, calling a pair of pre-Olympic games when the Badgers faced the legendary 1980 “Miracle on Ice” team.
Ted was the on-site producer and broadcaster for the 1995 PGA Championship at Riviera Country Club, the first golf major on US soil to air on national radio. He spent a few decades as the on-court announcer at the ATP’s L.A. Tennis Open at UCLA and as the 18th green announcer at the LPGA’s Kraft Nabisco golf championships in Rancho Mirage.
Ted recently completed his 19th season as a network studio host and sideline reporter for the Sports USA Radio Network’s broadcasts of the NFL, NHL, and NCAA football broadcasts. Ted’s lifetime sports memoir book, ‘Touching Greatness,’ is a best seller on Amazon and he’s currently doing a Touching Greatness podcast with some of sports and music’s biggest names.
