Larry Sherry was the Los Angeles Dodgers’ top right-handed relief pitcher for six years, beginning in late 1958. In 1964, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers where he pitched until the 1967, when he split his final season between the Tigers, Houston Astros and California Angels.

The onetime Fairfax High School All-City basketball star is best remembered as the hero of the 1959 World Series, when he had a hot hand in all four of the Dodgers victories over the Chicago White Sox--he won two and saved two, all in relief. His 0.71 Series earned-run average (ERA) carried the Dodgers to their first World Series triumph in Los Angeles. Sportswriters covering the Series voted Sherry the Babe Ruth Award as “outstanding player in the Series”.

Sherry had a “cup of coffee” with the Dodgers in 1958, tossing only 4.1 innings, and never had a winning season in the minor leagues. But, when he was brought up to the big team in July of 1959, his winning pace--7-2 won/loss record, including five wins in relief, with a 2.20 ERA--transported the Dodgers into the World Series.

Larry is the younger brother of former Dodger catcher and Angels manager Norm Sherry. The Brothers Sherry were roster-mates for four seasons with the Dodgers.
