Schneider, Bert
Football - 2003
In 1942 and 1943, Los Angeles High School football star Babe Schneider was a City of Los Angeles' All City halfback. In 1943, he was also the City of L.A.'s high school football Player of the Year.
Wrote the L.A. High newspaper: "Babe Schneider will tomorrow climax one of the greatest football careers in Roman history. This scintillating speedster is probably the best open field runner ever to wear a Blue and White uniform, and he richly deserves his widespread fame."
During his 1943 super season, Babe registered 77 points to lead all scorers in the Los Angeles City League. He tallied 12 touchdowns and made four points-after-touchdowns.
He is also described as having "a bang up game" playing defense.
Just two months after his high school graduation, Babe enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served through the end of World War II. Playing for the U.S. Navy football team stationed in San Diego, his Navy eleven topped UCLA 13 -6 in 1945.
Babe played the 1946 season with the UCLA Bruins, including the 1947 Rose Bowl.
Schneider was also an outstanding high school track star and high school and college baseball player, at one time invited to a try-out with the New York Yankees.
In later years, Coach Schneider was a key element in the development of the Encino Little League and its young players.
