Ross Newhan has reported baseball in Southern California since 1961. He covered the California Angels for eight years for the Long Beach Press-Telegram, before moving to the Los Angeles Times sports department in 1968. Newhan covered both the Angels and Dodgers for the better part of the next eleven years, until assigned exclusively to the Angels’ beat in 1979. Since 1986, he has been the Times’ national baseball writer.
While the bulk of his Times Sports work involves baseball, Newhan has also covered Triple Crown races, championship boxing matches, football bowl games, major golf tournaments, and the two most recent Winter Olympic Games.

The Long Beach Wilson High and Cal State Long Beach graduate has received writing awards from the Los Angeles Press Club, the Orange County Press Club, and the Associated Press. His story involving the sale of the L.A. Dodgers--written in collaboration with Sallie Hofmeister of the Times’ business section--was selected the top sports news story of 1997 by the Associated Press Sports Editors.

Ross has twice been chairman of the Los Angeles-Anaheim chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America, and frequently serves on BBWAA committees responsible for selecting national awards, such as the Most Valuable Player, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year.
