A USC offensive lineman, Trojan team captain, and football All-American in 1959, Ron was the #1 draft choice of BOTH the NFL Baltimore Colts and the AFL Boston Patriots. The Patriots traded their rights to Ron to the Los Angeles Chargers, and the Californian joined the then new American Football League (AFL) franchise.

Over the next decade with the Chargers (they moved to San Diego in 1961), Mix was named All-League and All-Pro every year. He retired in 1970, but Al Davis lured him back to play for two seasons with the Oakland Raiders.

In 1979, Ron was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was the second AFL player and the sixth offensive lineman to be so honored.

As the 20th century drew to a close, Sports Illustrated selected Ron to its all-time Football Dream Team; and Football Digest placed him 28th on its list of the 100 All-Time Greatest Players. He was ranked ahead of such NFL legends as Gale Sayers, Dan Marino, Joe Namath, Merlin Olsen, Tony Dorsett and Marcus Allen.
