Baseball - 1996

Barry Latman enjoyed a 13-year Major League Baseball career with the Chicago White Sox (1957-60), Cleveland Indians (1960-64), Los Angeles Angels (1964-66), and Houston Astros (1966-68). As a starter-reliever, he registered 59 victories, 16 saves, and a 3.91 ERA in 1,219 innings.

Latman’s best big league season was 1961, when the right-hander compiled a 13-5 record--including nine straight wins--and was selected to the American League All Star Team. In 1959, he won eight games for the American League Champion Chicago White Sox, and pitched creditably in the World Series.

In 1954, as a Fairfax High School senior, Latman was named Los Angeles City Baseball Player of the Year, and represented the City in the Hearst High School All-Star Game at the Polo Grounds in New York.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Barry schooled at Hancock Park Elementary, John Burroughs Junior High, and the University of Southern California. His initial participation in organized sports came at the Jewish Community Center at Beverly Boulevard and Edinburgh, which eventually moved to the site of today’s Westside JCC.
