Baseball - 1994

Art Harris’ Venice High School baseball team won the Los Angeles City Championship in 1972. As head baseball coach at Fairfax and Venice Highs from 1965 to 1976, his teams won nine League titles. His teams’ overall record was 222-57, a winning percentage of .796!

Harris initiated the baseball program at West Los Angeles College. He was the school’s head coach for 10 years, and his teams enjoyed a 274-136 (.663) won-loss record. During his coaching career, more than 100 of his players were chosen in the professional draft. An equal number went on to play college baseball while completing their education.

In 1984, Art was the Baseball Sites Director for the Los Angeles Olympic Games and, at the time of his SCJSHOF induction, was manager of the Scout Team and the Area Code Team for the Los Angeles Dodgers. For many years, on behalf of the Dodgers, he has been responsible for the coordination and preparation of the annual Major League draft of high school and college players.

Harris serves on the Board of Directors of the United States Baseball Federation, and is manager of the Dodger-sponsored team that competes in the International Goodwill Series versus Japan and Korea.

Art has been a recipient of Coach of the Year honors at local, state and national levels and, in 1995, he was inducted into the California Community College Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame.
