Volleyball - 1991

The most successful women’s collegiate volleyball coach in the North America, Sue Gozansky coached the lady University of Riverside Highlanders to three national volleyball championships--1977, 1982, 1986--and 17 straight appearances in post-season play. The dean of UC Riverside coaches, she has led the Highlanders’ women to a 569-314 won-loss record over 27 years.

Sue was voted Coach of the Year by the California Collegiate Athletic Association five times--1981, 1982, 1988, 1989, 1996. She was also head coach of UCR men’s volleyball team for five years.

Gozansky coached the West squad at the United States Sports Festival in 1990. In 1988, she was assistant coach of the USA women's "B" team, consisting of players who were candidates for roster spots on the national team.

In 1981, 1985 and 1989, Gozansky coached both the men’s and women’s USA Volleyball Teams at the World Maccabiah Games in Israel.

As a top athlete at Cal Poly Pomona, Sue Gozansky excelled in volleyball, basketball, track, badminton and tennis, and was awarded Athlete of the Year honors. In 1981, Cal Poly bestowed its Outstanding Alumnus Award upon Sue, while inducting her into the inaugural class of the college's Athletic Hall of Fame.

When women joined the NCAA in 1981, Sue was a member of the women's volleyball committee. In 1990, the NCAA recognized her for outstanding achievement in volleyball.
Gozansky authored the top-selling book, “Complete Book of Championship Volleyball Techniques and Drills”, and is a featured author in the 1990 Cadre Collection.

Sue’s career as a player and coach spanned a time when playing opportunities for women were limited and not socially acceptable. As a result of her efforts, expertise and leadership, she helped pioneer the changes that have come about in women's athletics.
