Earn, Carl

Tennis - 2004

Manual Arts High School’s Carl Earn was a top junior tennis star in the late 1930s. Rising fast at a time when some of the world’s best players were developed in the Southland.

* Carl turned pro after his Navy discharge in 1946, and toured for six-weeks with Don Budge and Bobby Riggs on what was then the tennis world’s biggest money tour ever.
* His victories included wins over big name contemporaries such as Fred Perry, Bobby Riggs, Billy Talbert and Herb Flam.
* He was inducted into the Southern California Tennis Hall of Fame in August 2002, at the age of 81.
