Cohen, Hy

Baseball - 1996

An eleven-year professional baseball player, Hy Cohen developed into one of the Los Angeles area’s most successful high school baseball, football and tennis coaches.

A physical education, health science and social sciences teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District for 30 years, twenty-eight of them at Birmingham High School, Cohen coached varsity baseball and football 1965-1977, and varsity tennis 1978-1989, amassing numerous championships in each sport.

His 1966 and 1969 baseball teams won the Los Angeles City title--at one point winning 26 straight games. His youngsters captured the League crown five times.

The Birmingham football team was best in the League five times. And, the Cohen-coached Birmingham tennis squad won its League eight times!

Hy’s big league pitching career includes three seasons with the Los Angeles Angels (1954-56), and a brief look with the Chicago Cubs in 1955.

In September, 1995, Hy was honored as Outstanding Educator by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Times and Sanyo at ceremonies at Dodger Stadium.
