Volleyball - 1990

One of the outstanding volleyball player-coaches ever produced in Southern California, Harlan Cohen was selected first team All-America in 1965. That year, his Westside Jewish Community Center team won the United States Volleyball Association national championship.

In 1963, Cohen’s Westside Center team won the National A.A.U. crown, and finished fifth in the U.S.V.B.A. Tournament. In 1961-65-69, he was a member of the United States’ World Maccabiah Games team, and he also coached the '69 squad.
From 1964 to 1977, Cohen was one of America’s most prolific volleyball coaches, with such key assignments as the 1967 U.S. Women's World Games and Pan-American Games teams, and the 1968 U.S. Women's Olympic Team. He coached the 1971-72 Santa Monica College Men's NCAA Champions, and the 1972-76 (assis-tant coach) USA Men's Olympic Volleyball team.

From 1973 to 1976, Harlan was varsity coach of men's volleyball at Pepperdine University. In 1976, he was head coach of Team USA vs Soviet Union (national tour-first time Russians had played volleyball in USA). In 1977, he again coached the USA Maccabiah Team.
