Soccer - 2008

Following his debut Major League Soccer season in 2006, in which he led all MLS rookies in goals scored (6 goals, 4 assists), and finished first among field players in minutes played (2,878 minutes), Chivas USA’s Jonathan Bornstein was named Gatorade MLS “Rookie of the Year”.

The Torrance-born soccer star was Chivas’ 4th pick (37th overall) in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. In 2001, forward Bornstein was All-County, All-CIF and team MVP at Los Alamitos High School, registering 23 goals and 16 assists en route to the CIF championship.

The following year at Cal Poly Pomona, he was California Collegiate Athletic Association 2002 Freshman of the Year. In 2002 and 2003, he made 1st team All-CCAA and 2nd team All-Far West. Bornstein transferred to UCLA for his senior year, scoring five goals and 4 assists, earning All-Pac 10 honors. He won the Golden Boot Award after leading the Irvine Strikers club team to the national championship, and helped the USA team to a silver medal at the 2005 Maccabiah Games in Israel.

Moving to the backfield for Chivas USA, clocking most of his playing time at fullback, the left-footed rookie recorded 32 starts in 32 regular season matches (plus 2 post-season starts/180 minutes), more than any MLS non-goal-keeper (missed only 2 minutes the entire season).
