1997 Alan Malamud Memorial Scholarship Recipient
The Alan Malamud Scholarship was established by the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame to honor the memory of popular Los Angeles sportswriter Alan Malamud. A scholarship is periodically awarded to a Southern California student planning a career in sportswriting.

The premiere presentation was made on January 18, 1997, to Rich Hammond, then a 19-year old University of Southern California sophomore. Hammond, a graduate of Narbonne High School in Harbor City, CA, worked on USC’s Daily Trojan as a freshman, and, at the time of his award, wrote part-time at the South Bay Daily Breeze. His selection was made by the SCJSHOF in conjunction with the California Scholastic Press Association.

Alan Malamud wrote for the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner for 25 years, before joining the L.A. Times in 1989. His daily “Notes On A Scorecard” column was a favorite of Southern California readers.

Malamud was born and raised in L.A., and was a graduate of Los Angeles High School and USC.
