2001 Alan Malamud Memorial Scholarship Recipient
Nevin Barich was a journalism senior at California State University Northridge, and staff sportswriter at the Los Angeles Daily News, at the time of his award in 2001. He headed up the Daily News local sports desk, which includes high school and college sports.

Nevin started at the Daily News in 1996, at the age of 17, when he was hired as a “stringer”, primarily covering high school football. Two years later, the Daily News made him a staff writer–at the time, one of the youngest staff members in the publication’s history.

Nevin entered CSUN after turning down a substantial grant to USC’s Annenberg School of Communication, preferring the Northridge atmosphere as well as closer proximity to the Daily News. At CSUN, he was a sports writer and columnist for the school’s Daily Sundial, a position he began while still in his senior year at Cleveland High School (where he was a Associate Sports Editor).

Student Nevin maintains a 3.78 grade point average and made the Dean’s List in each of the semesters he attended CSUN. He graduate in the Fall of 2001.

Pursuing sports journalism gave Nevin the avenue to pursue his earliest dreams. As he writes in his biography: “Maybe I’ll never get to round the bases after hitting a home run, but through sports writing, I’m still able to play.”
